Astoria Column: Oregon's Monument to Exploration

Covered in historic murals and offering panoramic views of the area, this historic monument honors the discovery, exploration and settlement of the Old West. Built in 1926 with financing from the Great Northern Railway, the Astoria Column is surrounded by a peaceful city park. It is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. Climb 164 spiral steps to reach the top and soak in the impressive views. Children of the 80s will recognize the city of Astoria as the setting for the movie Goonies.

  • What are the murals about?

    The murals tell the story of significant events in local history, including the time before Europeans arrived, the arrival of the railroad, the discovery of the Columbia River, and the terminus of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
  • Where can I get one of the gliders to fly from the top of the Column?

    Visit the gift shop located on-site to purchase one of these inexpensive wooden gliders. Then watch it soar from the top of the column, at a height of 125 feet.
